Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival 2010

Key to the festival's success is its promotion of regional foods. From the 1st of September through to the 7th October there's a month of events, talks, book launches and those yummy tasting session we all love.

Wine tasting at the Hotel du Vin will go down well, tutored sake testing at Moshi Moshi is sure also to be well received and the food trail that leads foodies around the city in search of international fare, is also set for success.

Speaking of which, international celebrity sensation Madhur Jaffrey's in town. Perhaps the world authority on Indian cooking, Madhur's launching her first book in seven years.

The Food and Drink Festival is now so popular it runs throughout the year. Last year, 2009, it attracted 110,000 people to tuck in and indulge in their love of food, and this year this number is set to rise - hotels in Brighton fill up quicker than their guests' plates at this time of year, so it's always worth booking early.

Even though, as with Brighton, the festival embraces a variety of foods, it's local produce that returns again and again to the menu.

On the live food stage (September 11/12) in the Pavilion Gardens, Masterchef champion Steven Wallis will be bringing in the freshest of ingredients (all local produce) and joining other experts in delivering 40-minute demonstrations.

'Local produce, international flavours' is the theme of the Brighton and Newhaven Fish sales contribution. Teaming up with Katnook Estates wines, the pair is setting out to show just what's possible with a skillet and a little skill.

If you prefer to get your hands on and make the food yourselves, look to the fabulous fruit cookery workshops. Get healthy and get energised with the vitamin rich creations, all demonstrated in Stanmer Park.

Traditional seafront tastes are more than catered for with a Cockney night under the Kings Road Arches. Take a spin on the classic carousel, grab some fish and chips, finish off with ice cream and entertainment - and it's all for charity too.

Again spicing things up is the Fiery Foods UK Chilli Festival (18-19 September) with a perfect antidote: some savoury samples of organic vegetarian cheeses, served on the Saturday at Infinity Foods in the North Laines.

If you travel to Brighton in the middle of September you really will have too much food to tempt you. And it's really good quality foods, too: Gourmet organic specialist Terre á Terre is taking over the Palm Court Restaurant on Brighton Pier to serve up their interpretation of traditional seaside foods and snacks.

From the 20th to the 26th September is local food week. There's a farmers' market in Churchill Square, a food quiz in Gardner Street, a local food picnic in Preston Park, a chocolate market (again in Churchill square) and stall after stall of local produce in Hove's George Street.

Foodies are sure to fill hotels in Brighton and be seen wandering the town in search of gastronomic, gourmet and everyday foods to sample. So why not join them?

We were so inspired by an earlier Southern Counties Show promoting local foods that now, the Ambassador Hotel has pioneered getting local foods onto our breakfast tables and serves only Sussex beers in its bar.

And we think were the only hotel in Brighton that has worked out the carbon footprint of its breakfast! And thanks to sourcing local foods, it's more than one hundred times more environmentally friendly than cheaper alternatives sourced on the world market.

We love our food and we try and serve guest the best we can. Good food means happy guests, so it's no wonder our hotel vacancies in Brighton are few and far between during food week!

Back to the festival and to finish there is coffee tasting and educational talks, a beer festival, a seed saving course, more wine tasting (smile), all finishing off with the Brighton and Hove Foodie Awards finals and another farmers' market at Churchill Square.
